March 7, 2014
Uniqlo has hired Pharrell Williams as the face of its T-shirt line, designed by Japanese streetwear legend and A Bathing Ape founder NIGO.
The UT T-shirt line features styles for men, women, and kids. For Spring/Summer 2014, Williams has joined as “collaborator and spokesperson” and will appear in the line’s campaign images and TV commercials.
The collection will get a global unveiling on March 28 with a SPRZ NY (“Surprise New York”) project, a collaboration with the city’s Museum of Modern Art. The whole second floor of the brand’s New York flagship will be converted into a SPRZ NY experience, with further displays in Uniqlo’s 14 other flagships around the world. As a teaser, the limited edition “Think other” T-shirt worn by Williams in the promo shots will be available to buy online March 6 for the lucky first 240 customers.
Uniqlo will also work with Williams’ “i am OTHER” creative collective on a special line of men’s and women’s T-shirts and caps which will hit stores in mid-April.
It’s been a busy time for Williams. At the weekend the musician auctioned off his hat from the Grammy awards, raising US$44,100 for his From One Hand to Another non-profit.
He has also recently announced a collaboration with Dutch fashion brand G-Star RAW designed to benefit the environment. The RAW for Oceans collection is set to hit stores on Aug 15 and uses “Bionic Yarn” (fibres made from recycled plastic collected from the sea).
